  • ಊರು ಸುಟ್ಟರೂ ಹನುಮಪ್ಪ ಹೊರಗೆ
    • Uru suTTarU hanumappa horage
    • Literal: though the whole town [lanka] is burnt [down], Mr.Hanuman is afar(away at a safe distance)
    • Meaning: This is said of a person who doesn’t take the responsibility/stand where he is ought to [esp. when a crisis(burning issue) demands his intervention]

 

  • ಉಣ್ಣುವಾಗ ಉಡುವಾಗ ಊರೆಲ್ಲ ನೆಂಟರು
    • uNNuvaaga uDuvaaga Urella neMTaru
    • Literal: when [one is] dining, when [one is] clothing, [one has] relatives all across the town.
    • Meaning: when one is furnished with riches, There is no dearth of relatives to him.

 

  • ಉಪಕಾರಕ್ಕೋಗಿ ಉಪದ್ರ ಬಂತು
    • upakArakkOgi upadra baMtu
    • Literal: went to help out and got the bother.

 

  • ಉಪವಾಸ ಇರಬಹುದು ಉಪದ್ರ ತಾಳಲಾಗದು
    • upavAsa irabahudu upadra tALalAgadu
    • Literal: one can fast [with ease], but can’t bear the bother

 

  • ಉರಿದ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಉಪ್ಪು ತುಂಬಿಸಿದಂಗೆ
    • urida hoTTege uppu tumbisidaMge
    • Literal: its like filling the wounded stomach with salt

 

  • ಊರಿಗೆ ಹಂದಿಯಿರಬೇಕು, ಕೇರಿಗೆ ನಿಂದಕನಿರಬೇಕು
    • Urige haMdiyirabEku, kErige niMdakanirabEku
    • Literal: a town has to have pigs, a colony has to have a reproacher

 

  • ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಉಪ್ಪಿನಕಾಯಿ, ಮಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಸಮಾನ.
    • UTkke illada uppinakaayi, maNNige samaana
    • Literal: pickle which is not available during a meal, is like mud
    • Usage: Usability of a product is always linked to a specific circumstances. If someone/something is unavailable when they/it is needed or being used most of the times, then its not of any use. It is meant for people who have talent and dont make use of it when its needed.

 

  • ಉರಿಯುವ ಬೆಂಕಿಗೆ ತುಪ್ಪ ಸುರಿದಂತೆ
    • uriyuva beMkige tuppa suridaMte
    • Literal: Its like pouring ghee(fuel) to the raging fire.
    • Meaning: When a person is already angry the anger is aggravated by indiscreet words.
    • Equivalent: to add insult to the injury
    • Equivalent: Adding fule to the fire
